Like-Hate

I cringe each time I hear sentences like "She was like 'I didn't do it' " or " We were like enjoying ourselves". I understand language is more about being able to understand the other and not about a set of rigid rules to be followed, but Why, oh why? Why can't people learn to simply drop the word altogether. The sentences are perfectly fine without "like".

btw the 1st sentence wont be fine by just dropping like...
you can say "She said 'I didn't do it' " but say when you are bringing in theatrics, imitating the exact mannerisms then one could probably say - 'she was like[pause]then act out the rest'
but then there's absolutely no excuse for the 2nd sentence...
'n why cant ppl stop using that word...well its like any other bad habit where easy to pick up but very hard to ditch...so its always better to ensure that you don't pick one up in 1st place...but considering how many ppl talk like this nowadays, its proving to be one successful meme...

'n yea this layout is better...

No, I didn't mean that the sentences are correct without any other word taking the place of like, but that the sentences are better off without them. And this is not a question but a gripe -
